Duration: 4 months

Capacitate has supported the negotiations and advocacy efforts for the ratification of the African Youth Charter in Tanzania. Our contributions led to an invitation to an invitation to a parliamentary committee meeting preceding the ratification process. Specifically, in partnership with UNFPA, we focused on advocating against the reservation on the article 13.4h, which denies young girls the opportunity to return to school after pregnancy. This reservation perpetuates the denial of education for millions of girls, facing unplanned pregnancies resulting from non-consensual, forced and unprotected sex.

Further, we have produced a documentary for UNFPA titled,’ Listen to us’ available on UNFPA’s website. The documentary sheds light on the lives of Tanzanian youth in Shinyanga, Zanzibar and Temeke-Dar es-salaam, amplifying their voices, concerns and proposed solutions. Addressing issues such as Female Genital Mutilation, early marriage, teenage pregnancy and youth unemployment, the film was showcased at the Global Youth forum in Bali, Indonesia, during the ICPD + 20 conferences in Dec 2012.
