PTL Solar and African Reflection Foundation

Client(s): PTL Solar, the African Reflections Foundation, Rural Energy Agency (REA)

Area of Focus: Energy and Environment

Duration: 10 months and ongoing

Capacitate supported a bid by PTL Solar and the African Reflection foundation to grants from the Tanzania Rural Energy Agency (REA), totaling $200,000 USD. The projects were designed to focus on the provision of solar technology in remote schools and health centers in the Kyela district of Mbeya region. These institutions, located at least 25 km away from the national electricity grid, face challenges such as inadequate incentives for health workers and teachers, particularly in hard- to -reach- areas. For schools, the emphasis was on providing solar solutions to girl’s hostels, science laboratories and schools in difficult-to-access locations.

Similarly, the health centres often remote and grappling with poor retention of health workers and high maternal and infant mortality deaths, were targeted. The proposals successfully reached the finals of the ‘Lighting Africa’ project, supported by the World Bank. Capacitate took charge of preparing presentations and publications for the finalists’ exhibition. Currently, these projects are under consideration for financing within REA (Rural Energy Agency – Tanzania). Capacitate was instrumental in conceiving the ideas, conducting the feasibility study and developing both the program and financial proposals.
